Should I get my cat (1 year of age) a friend?
Hi. My cat, Luna, is currently about one and a half years old.
She’s constantly bored (crying, meowing, etc.), but all of my family gives her tons of attention every day. There are no health related issues to this, she’s spayed, and is perfectly healthy, I’m just wondering if anyone can identify if I should be getting her a kitten/cat her age to play with.
Note: I understand that she may be territorial, I’ve had a cat before.
She was a Maine Coon, and those cats are EXTREMELY territorial.
Thanks, if you can help me. I just thought this would be a quicker way than actually going to the lady’s house whom I adopted Luna from, and asking the same question. (She lives about an hour away.)
Yes, I agree – your cat, Luna (What a pretty name!) is young enough to have a companion. Please remember thant when you introduce a new cat to the household that you have to keep it in a separate room, say a bedroom, for a week or so with litterbox, water and food. Drop a towel or small blanket on the floor for each cat, rub some catnip on it and allow each cat to roll around in it. After two days, switch blankets and let Luna and the other kitty get used to each other’s smells. Let them play underneath the door and, each day after the third day, allow them to have an hour together. After a week or so, let them go together and see what happens; if they’re constantly fighting, then keep them apart for a few more days.
Also, the crying and meowing may indicate something else – the cat is telling you something.
